An unexpected romance triggers comic consequences for a young woman, her mother, and her boss, grappling with the complications of love, sex, and identity.
The idea behind this movie is good BUT there are many issues. The biggest issue is Nicole Kidman. Why was she cast in this role? There is zero chemistry between her and Zac Ephron. The role does not suit her and she is overacting throughout the whole movie. Zac’s character asks if she was in kindergarten when she had her daughter, this would be suitable if she looked like a young mum, but she does not. A lot of the time she looks older than she is and quite sickly. There is some major issues with the writing that most likely contributed to the actors looking awkward and leaving the audience with no emotional connection to the characters. This starts at the beginning when they are getting drunk together, the whole scene feels forced.
It’s a standardized, stale romance that pales in comparison to the recent “The Idea of You” which had a lot more charm, even when that movie wasn’t amazing. But it felt a lot cuter than this one and Anne Hathaway made it a lot more believable.
In “A Family Affair” though, the chemistry is visible in the faces of the two main actors instead of between them. That only furthers the artificiality of it all.
The plot evolves in a predictable way, on the acting side there are no standouts and it’s directed without much flair. It’s astonishing that all the prominent names behind and before the camera agreed to make such a nothing of a movie.
